1. 안녕하세요. 먼저 한국학진흥사업단 온라인 뉴스레터 독자들을 위해 자기소개를 부탁드립니다.
안녕하세요. 오창현이라고 합니다. 저는 경기 양평 산촌 사회조직의 변화를 연구해 “한국 농촌공동체의 구성원리”라는 논문으로 2005년도에 인류학 석사학위를 받았습니다. 이어 2012년도에는 서해 충남, 전남 도서 연안 어촌들을 현장연구하고 이를 일본 어업과 소비문화와 비교하여 “18~20세기 서해의 조기 어업과 어민문화”라는 논문으로, 인류학 박사학위를 받았습니다. 세부전공은 한국 민속학으로, 특히 사회조직, 생업기술, 민간신앙, 소비문화, 민간지식 등에 대해 연구하고 있습니다.
제 경력을 소개해 드리면, 박사과정 중인 2009년부터 국립민속박물관에서 학예연구사로 근무하기 시작하였습니다. 오랫동안 박물관 근무를 하며, 실무경험도 쌓고 자연스럽게 문화유산학, 박물관학 분야로 연구영역을 확장할 수 있었습니다. 2020년에는 국립목포대학교로 자리를 옮겨 인문콘텐츠학부(문화유산 전공)에 근무하며, 박물관학, 문화유산학, 민속학 등을 가르치고 있습니다.
2. 선생님께서 한국학 분야에서 연구 활동을 하게 된 특별한 계기가 있으신가요? 이렇듯 연구 활동을 지속할 수 있는 원동력은 무엇인가요?
학부에 들어올 때는 소위 철학적 혹은 생물학적 인간학에 관심이 많았습니다. 보편적인 원리를 통해 구체적인 인간사회상을 설명할 수 있다고 믿었습니다. 그러나 학부 시절 대학 방송반에서 기자 활동을 하면서 세상에는 참 다양한 사람과 다양한 생각이 있다는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 심지어 내가 잘 알고 있다고 생각했던 사람들, 할아버지 세대나 아버지 세대에 대해서도 아는 게 거의 없다는 생각이 들었습니다. 가까운 20세기 한국사나 문화에 호기심을 가지다 보니, 제가 알고 있던 20세기와는 전혀 다른 20세기가 한국 전역에서 다양하게 펼쳐져 왔다는 점에 놀랐습니다. 저는 이 수많은 근대 경험 속에서 도대체 ‘우리의 근대’라는 것이 어떻게 설명 가능한가가 항상 궁금합니다. 이러한 궁금증이 항상 더 많은 지역과 현장을 다니며 연구하게 만드는 가장 큰 힘인 것 같습니다.
3. 한국학기초자료사업을 통해 도서 연안 공동체 관계 문서의 수집과 DB 구축을 목표로 다양한 연구 활동을 진행 중 이신데요. 연구활동에 대한 자세한 소개와 함께 해당 연구가 궁극적으로 어떠한 부분에 기여할 것으로 기대하고 계신지 여쭙고 싶습니다.
이 사업을 구상하게 된 것은 2021년부터 2022년까지 문화재청(현 국가유산청)사업의 일환으로 전국의 도서 연안 지방의 해조류 채취 관행을 조사하고 정리하면서부터입니다. 지역 내 자원을 공동 관리하는 마을 자치 규범에 대한 사례 연구는 많이 있었지만, 이를 전국 단위에서 비교 검토해 본 일은 없었습니다. 지역 자원의 생산, 분배, 유통 등과 관련한 권리가 지역별로 상당히 상이하게 발달해 왔다는 점에 놀랐습니다. 이와 함께 조금 더 시야를 확장하고 심화하여, 도서 연안 지방에 대한 전국적이고 체계적인 연구가 필요하다는 생각이 들었습니다. 기존의 기초자료 연구들이 농촌에서 발달한 문중이나 부계집단을 중심으로 이루어졌던 것과 달리 산과 바다에 접한 마을에 대해, 또 기존 연구에서 비교적 관심을 적게 가져왔지만 풍성하게 남아 있는 20세기 문서를 중심으로 연구하면 좋겠다고 판단했습니다.
현재 우리 사업단은 역사학자와 민속학자가 중심이 되어 작년 여름부터 경북 울진, 경남 거제, 전남 장흥의 세 지역의 문서를 정리하고 있습니다. 지난 1년 동안 세 지역에서 371건 5,714장의 DB를 구축하였습니다. 이 세 지역은 자연환경, 혈연집단, 전근대 행정체계 등의 지역적 특성이 전혀 상이해, 세 지역에 대한 비교를 통해 향후 한국의 지역적 다양성을 조명해 볼 수 있을 것이라고 기대합니다. 간단히 소개해 드리면, 우선, 경북 울진 구산리는 조선 후기에 다양한 국가의 역을 수행하였던 마을로, ‘노반계(老班契)’라는 연령집단이 발달한 곳입니다. 이곳의 조선 후기 문서 중 일부는 공개된 바 있지만, 1898년부터 남아 있고 지금도 작성되고 있는 좌목, 회계장부 등의 마을문서는 일반에게 공개된 적이 없습니다. 이번 연구를 통해 중앙이나 지방 정부와의 관계 속에서 20세기 이후 일상생활의 변화가 드러날 수 있을 것이라고 기대합니다. 두 번째로 동남부에 위치한 거제 다대리입니다. 이 마을에는 1805년부터 1970년대 중반까지 미역밭(곽전) 등 공동자산의 운영과 별신굿 관련한 기록물이 다량 남아 있습니다. 장기시계열적으로 마을의 생활상을 들여다 볼 수 있는 자료가 될 것이라고 기대합니다. 다대리에서 가까운 거제 구조라리의 문서는 오래전 한국학중앙연구원에서 정리해 일반에 공개하여 잘 알려져 있습니다. 마지막으로 서남부에 위치한 전남 장흥 신상리입니다. 이곳은 원래 섬이었지만, 1960년대 간척으로 육지화된 지역으로 19세기 말부터 현재까지 김양식이 활발한 지역입니다. 이곳에는 1925년부터 회계장부, 회의록 등이 남아 있는데, 앞선 두 마을과 달리 부계집단인 문중이 발달하면서 동시에 동계도 강하게 유지되고 있는 지역입니다. 부계집단과 마을조직과 어떠한 관계를 맺으며 전개되어 왔는지 살펴볼 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있습니다.
4. 한국학기초자료사업을 통한 연구 진행과정은 어떠했나요? 그리고 해당 사업이 앞으로도 한국학 확산에 기여하기 위해 개선해야 할 점은 무엇이 있을까요?
우선, 한국학기초자료사업이 2023년부터 재개되었다는 점에 매우 기쁩니다. 이전부터 한국학 연구에서 기초자료를 정리하고 공개하는 일이 가장 필요하다고 생각해 왔습니다. 대학으로 자리를 옮긴 이후로 계속해서 어떻게 이 지역에 펼쳐진 자료를 수집해 공개할 수 있을까 고민해 왔습니다. 개별적인 현장연구나 문헌연구는 의지를 가진 개개인이 혼자서도 할 수 있지만, 처음부터 자료를 수집하고 정리하고 나아가 공개하는 일은 여러 사람의 협력과 기관의 도움이 반드시 필요합니다.
이번 사업과 같이 전국 단위의 사업인 경우에는 한국학중앙연구원의 도움 없이는 불가능합니다. 또, 각 지역과 관계를 맺어온 각지의 민속학자, 역사학자가 참여해야 하고, 또 전공이 상이한 연구자들이 함께 현장을 답사하며 의견을 교환하고 연구를 심화하는 과정이 필요합니다. 이러한 방식의 연구는 한국학기초자료사업을 통하지 않고서는 이루어 낼 수 없다고 생각합니다.
이번 사업은 2023년부터 2026년까지 3년간 지속됩니다. 그러나 이후에도 지금하고 있는 사업을 이어 받아 도서 연안뿐 아니라, 산간 지방에 산재하는 다양한 자료가 수집 정리, 공개되기를 기대합니다. 이번 1차연도 연구에서 느낀 바이지만, 21세기 들어 많은 지역에서 공동체 관계 자료들이 빠른 속도로 사라지고 있습니다. 산과 바다라는 독특한 자연환경을 끼고 발전한 한국 내의 다양한 공동체의 역사와 문화를 발견하고 보고하는 일은 한국학을 풍성하게 만드는 데 기여 할 것이라고 믿습니다.
5. 앞으로 선생님께서 꼭 이루고 싶은 장기적 목표나 바람이 있다면 무엇일까요?
한국의 유교화가 미친 영향에 관심이 많습니다. 제가 연구해 온 민속학은 전통적으로 ‘유교적인 문화’와 민속을 양반과 서민 문화에 각각 대응시켜 설명해 온 경향이 있습니다. 그래서 유교문화의 주변부 사람들과 문화에 더 관심을 기울이며, 한국 문화의 원류를 거기서 찾기도 했습니다. 그러나 저는 유교적 생활양식의 확산이나 그것에 대한 개개인의 욕망이 ‘한국적인 근대화’를 가져온 주요한 동인이 되었다고 생각합니다. 한국인이 꿈꾸어 온 일상생활을 실현해 가는 과정이 당대의 기술, 유통, 소비 등의 물질문명과 어떻게 연계되어 있는지를 살피고 싶습니다. 박사과정 이후 연구해 온 어업 기술과 어물 소비, 유통에 대한 연구도, 또 이번에 소개해 드린 한국학기초자료 사업도 저의 이러한 장기적인 목표와 긴밀하게 연결되어 있습니다.
6. 질문에 대해 답변해 주셔서 감사드립니다. 마지막으로 온라인 뉴스레터 독자들과 국내외 한국학 연구자들, 또는 한국학진흥사업단에게 한 말씀 부탁드립니다.
뉴스레터의 독자 대부분이 한국사학자나 한국어·문학자가 아닐까 생각합니다. 저는 제가 몸 담아온 문화인류학이나 민속학이, 한국학의 한 분야로 좀 더 견고하게 자리 잡아 나갈 수 있기를 희망합니다. 한국사학자나 한국어·문학 연구자들이 좀 더 민속학의 연구성과를 받아들이고, 문화인류학을 포함한 민속학 연구자도 한국학의 주요한 흐름을 이해하고, 자신의 연구방법론 위에서 구축된 연구성과를 더 적극적으로 한국학계에 가지고 나와 소통하고 한국학 발전에 기여해 나갈 수 있기를 기대합니다.
Meeting with Korean Studies Scholars

1. Hello. Please introduce yourself to the readers of the KSPS Newsletter.
Hello. My name is Oh Chang-hyeon. I received my master’s degree in anthropology in 2005 with a thesis entitled “The Composition Principles of Agricultural Communities in Korea,” which looked at the changes in the social structure of Sanchon Village in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi-do. Then, in 2012, I received my doctorate degree in anthropology with a dissertation entitled “The Redlip Croaker Fishing Industry and Fishermen’s Culture of the (Korean peninsula’s) West Sea in the 18th to 20th Centuries,” which involved fieldwork in farming villages of the western coastal island regions of Chungcheongnam-do and Jeollanam-do Provinces that was then compared with the fishing industry and consumption culture in Japan. I specialize in Korean folklore studies, with a particular focus on social structures, occupational technology, folk belief, consumer culture, and folk knowledge.
To introduce my professional working experience, I began working as a curator at the National Folk Museum in 2009 when I was in my doctoral program. While working at the museum for a long time and building up working experience, my area of research naturally expanded to the fields of cultural heritage and museum studies. In 2020, I moved to the National Mokpo University, where I teach museum studies, cultural heritage studies, and folklore studies in the Department of Humanities Content (Cultural Heritage Major).
2. Was there a particular impetus that sparked your interest in Korean Studies research? What was the driving force that allowed you to continue your research activities in this way?
When I entered my undergraduate program, I was very interested in the study of people from what you might call a philosophical or biological perspective. I believed that through universal principles, one could explain the nature of a definite human society. However, while working as a journalist for the university broadcasting club, I started to realize that the world is full of diverse people with diverse thoughts. I even began to realize that I knew very little about people I thought I understood well, like my grandfather’s or father’s generation. As I became curious about recent 20th-century Korean history and culture, I was surprised to discover that a completely different 20th century than the one I knew had unfolded in diverse ways across Korea. I have always been curious about how “our modern era” can be explained within these numerous modern experiences, and this curiosity seems to be the greatest strength in driving me to always travel to more regions and locales to conduct research.
3. Through the Collection and Documentation of Manuscripts for Korean Studies program, you are currently engaged in diverse research activities with the objective of gathering documents and creating a database related to community relationships in coastal island regions. Please introduce the details and the expected contributions of these research activities.
The conception of this project began as part of a Cultural Heritage Administration (now Korea Heritage Service) project from 2021 to 2022 involving the survey and organization of the practices surrounding the collection of marine plants in coastal island regions across the country. Although there had been much research on case studies of villages’ self-governing norms for the joint management of local resources, there had been no comparative review of this on a national level. The development of rights related to the production, division, and distribution of local resources differed significantly from region to region, which was surprising. Continuing along this line but with an expanded and deepened perspective, I had the thought that nation-wide and systematic research on the coastal island regions was needed. While existing research on primary materials focused on the clan organizations or patrilineal groups that developed in farming villages, little interest or research had been done on the abundance of remaining 20th-century documents from villages in mountainous and coastal regions, so I decided that this would be a good area to research.
Since last summer, our project team, which consists of scholars specialized in history and folklore, has been organizing documents from three regions, namely Uljin in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Geoje in Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jangheung in Jeollnam-do. Over the past year, we have developed a database of 371 documents comprising 5,714 pages. As the regional character of these three areas, in terms of natural environment, kinship groups, and pre-modern administrative systems, is completely different, I expect that a comparison of these three areas will shed light on Korea’s regional diversity.
To briefly introduce each locale, first, there is Gusan-ri Village in Uljin. In the late Joseon period, this village was where diverse countries carried out trade and where an age-based association known as Noban’gye 老班契 emerged. While some of the village’s documents from the late Joseon period have been made public, documents from 1898 until today, such as procedurals and accounting books, have not yet been presented to public. I expect this research will reveal the changes of everyday life in the 20th century amidst the relationships with the central and local governments. Second, there is Dadae-ri Village in Geoje, located in the southeast. This village has numerous remaining records from 1805 to the 1970s relating to the management of joint property, such as sea mustard farms, as well as village rituals. I expect that these materials will provide longitudinal insight into daily village life. The documents of Gujora-ri Village in Geoje, located near Dadae-ri, were organized by AKS long ago and are well known to the public. Finally, there is Sinsang-ri Village in Jangheung, located in the southwest. Originally an island, the area became part of the mainland through a land reclamation project in the 1960s and has been an active area of laver cultivation from the late 19th century until today. Documents remaining in this village include accounting books and meeting minutes from 1925 and later. Unlike the previous two villages, village organizations here were able to maintain their strength concurrently with the development of patrilineal groups such as the clan organization. Thus, I expect that these materials will help show how relationships between patrilineal groups and village organizations formed and unfolded.
4. What was the research process like with the Collection and Documentation of Manuscripts for Korean Studies program? And what things should be improved for this program to contribute to the spread of Korean Studies in the future?
First, I am very happy that the Collection and Documentation of Manuscripts for Korean Studies program was resumed in 2023. Since long ago, I thought that the organization and presentation to the public of primary materials was the most important task in Korean Studies research. After moving to my position at the university, I continuously deliberated about how to gather and present the materials that were scattered around the region. Independent field research or document research can be done alone by a willing researcher, but the preliminary gathering and organization of materials, along with the public presentation of those materials, require the collaboration of various people and the help of institutions.
Projects conducted on a nation-wide level, like this one, would be impossible without the help of AKS. Furthermore, such research requires the participation of folklore and history scholars who have formed relationships with the various locales, and must be enriched by having researchers of different majors visit the sites together and exchange opinions. I think that research of this kind cannot be undertaken if not through the Collection and Documentation of Manuscripts for Korean Studies program.
This project will continue for three years from 2023 to 2026. However, after this, I hope that this project can be continued through research on the collection, organization, and presentation of diverse materials distributed not only in coastal island regions, but in mountainous regions as well. As I have felt during the first year of this research project, materials related to community organizations have been disappearing at a rapid rate in many regions since the start of the 21st century. I believe that discovering and reporting on the history and culture of Korea’s diverse community organizations that developed within the unique natural environments of the mountains and the sea will greatly contribute to enlarging and enriching Korean Studies.
5. What long-term goal or wish do you hope to achieve in the future?
I am very interested in the influence of Korea’s Confucian culture. In the field of folklore studies, there is a traditional tendency to align Confucian culture and folklore with noblemen and commoners, respectively. Therefore, I have paid extra attention to the people and culture surrounding Confucian culture, sometimes trying to trace the original source of Korean culture. However, I think that the spread of the Confucian lifestyle and people’s personal desire for such a lifestyle was a main driving force that brought on “Korean modernization.” Thus, I want to explore how the process by which Koreans realized the everyday life of their dreams is connected to the material civilization of the time, including technology, distribution, and consumption. The research I’ve conducted after my PhD program on fishing technology and the consumption and distribution of marine products, as well as the Collection and Documentation of Manuscripts for Korean Studies project introduced here, are closely connected to such long-term goals.
6. Thank you for your detailed answers to our questions. In conclusion, please share a word with the newsletter’s readers, Korean Studies researchers both in Korea and abroad, and the KSPS.
I think that most readers of this newsletter are likely to be scholars of Korean history or Korean language and literature. My hope is that cultural anthropology and folklore studies, my areas of interest, can more firmly establish their places as fields of Korean Studies. I hope that if scholars of Korean history and Korean language and literature more readily embrace the research results of folklore studies, and if researchers of cultural anthropology, including folklore studies, better understand the main flow of Korean Studies and more actively communicate their own methodological research results with Korean Studies academia, then more contributions to the advancement of Korean Studies can be made.
